Filmed by Bike is Back!

Contributor: Alden Roth, Filmed by Bike

Ride on over, grab some popcorn, and get ready to watch the world’s best bike films! After a short hiatus, Filmed by Bike is coming back to Portland, OR, for its 22nd Annual Film Festival this May. This festival will screen more than 30 bike-focused short films across a 3-day weekend at the historic Hollywood Theatre. We will be screening short films from the US, Canada, the UK, Chile and Germany, including works from renowned filmmakers Chris Burkard and Timothy Dhalleine. New this year, there will be a feature film screening on Sunday to close out the festival. Filmed by Bike is more than just films—it puts the festival in film festival. It’ll be a weekend full of parties, group rides, a bike gear swap, and raffles with epic prizes.

Founded by Ayleen Crotty, Filmed by Bike has been screening the best bike movies from around the world since 2003! After running the festival for 22 years, Ayleen decided to pass the torch to a group of cyclists and filmmakers, led by Alden Roth and Erik Douds, who want to see Filmed by Bike live on for years to come. Alden and Erik first got involved with the festival when their films screened in Portland a few years ago. Erik has also served on the FBB Jury.

They are stoked for it to be coming back to the Hollywood Theatre this year. This year’s line keeps the beloved film block themes of “Adventure” and “Bike Love” and adds film blocks focusing on women, overcoming adversity, and a family-friendly matinee on Saturday.

Who are these new faces behind a familiar logo? Alden is a dedicated cyclist and Warmshowers host living in West Virginia, close to the C&O Canal. He loves to host folks who ride through because it’s a unique opportunity to connect with people and offer them a hand while they’re on their journey. When he’s not at home hosting others, he’s out on bikepacking adventures or riding in ultra-endurance races like Endless Mountains and Silk Road Mountain Race.

Erik is a cyclist living with Type 1 Diabetes who spent several years living on his bike and touring around the United States and beyond. He’s pedaled through more than 15,000 miles and stayed with countless Warmshowers hosts, which was documented in his film and magazine project Miles of Portraits. One of his favorite memories is staying with a Warmshowers host while touring through India and getting to experience their culture first-hand.

Erik, Alden, and the rest of the team can’t wait to meet all of the filmmakers and cyclists in Portland next month. It’s going to be a weekend full of epic bike films, group rides, parties, and more.
